John 20:1 - 18
The Gift of Recognition
“I have seen the Lord.”
John 20:18
Joyous celebration of Easter
continues in our hearts
as the reality of Jesus’ death gives way to life,
to his eternal reign with God and the Holy Spirit.
The beauty of the resurrection story tells us
that people didn’t recognize who Jesus was
even as he appeared and spoke with them in John 20,
that people didn’t recognize who Jesus was
even as he appeared and spoke with them in John 20,
Mary mistakes Jesus for the gardner;
only when she hears him call her name
does she recognize him as the risen Lord.
does she recognize him as the risen Lord.
In Luke 24, walking along the Emmaus Road,
two men do not recognize the risen Jesus in their midst.
Sometimes we do not pay enough attention
to the means of grace
that come from God in Christ.
We do not recognize Christ’s presence among us
even in times of adversity.
Let us remain
prayerful,
watchful,
and joyful
at the presence of a Lord
whose great sacrifice resulted in us being heirs to eternal life.

Pay attention to details you might miss.
Gracious God,
thank you that in Jesus Christ
you have made the mystery of the Resurrection real to us.
Amen
